Get Set For Summer!

April 25, 2018

Summer is a time for laughter, joy, and making memories, not for falling ill or being obstructed by seasonal allergies. While those pesky allergens and bacteria might not agree, we certainly think your time is better spent doing the things you love rather than being sick. Read on to learn about 5 amazing essential oils for the summer months, and make this summer your best one yet!

It happens all the time. You’ve planned this vacation for months. You took the time off, used your vacation days, spent the money, and now, right before you hit the road, you’re coming down with a cold. Great! Now the first 3 days of the trip you’ll be in bed while everyone else is having fun in the sun, and this is the only vacation you can take this summer.

Let’s write a different version of this story. You’re going on vacation with the family, and you’ve been planning it for months. You’re so excited - you haven’t had a real vacation for as far back as you can remember. Everything is in place, bags are packed, and, Oh no!, you’re coming down with a cold. Eh, you’ve been here before. Nothing to worry about! You’ll load up your bags with Peppermint, Lemon, and Sweet Marjoram essential oil and be on your way.

The second story sounds a lot better, you seem happier, at least. However, you might be wondering, “Is the second story reasonable? How am I supposed to believe this?” and we wouldn’t blame you. Skepticism is important in life, especially now, as there are more gimmicks for us to fall for today than there ever have been. But that’s what separates essential oils from being a gimmick. We’ll put it this way, if you believe in the power of a nasal spray to assist your ailing air passageways, you believe in essential oils. If you believe in lotions, notably Aloe Vera for sunburn in the summer, then you also believe in the power of essential oils.

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years to help our bodies cope with illnesses and irregularities, and they are still used in abundance today. Although you don’t see them, essential oils are used in countless products to help us with some of the same issues humans faced thousands of years ago. Since we used Aloe Vera as an example previously, we’ll use it again. You’re on that vacation we’ve been talking about, and you get burned out in the sun. What’s your first move? Aloe Vera. It’s soothing for your burned skin, and it makes you feel better. It may not get rid of the burn, but it’s sure going to make it easier for you to get through the healing process without experiencing discomfort. Aloe Vera lotion contains Aloe Vera essential oil or extract. In fact, it’s the primary active ingredient. Just like with many household remedies, you may have been using essential oils for years and you didn’t even know it.

So, what does all of this mean for you? It might mean it’s time to try something new, or unknown, because it just might be what you’ve been looking for. It might also mean that natural remedies are your new way of curbing symptoms. It also might mean absolutely nothing. That much is up to you. As always, though, it’s vitally important for anyone who’s interested in using essential oils should ask their primary care physician if they’re right for them, but if your doctor says you’re good to go, you might want to give them a shot. After all, it’s your summer vacation, enjoy it! Don’t let a minor illness take away from the time you get to spend with the people you love and care about.

If you found this blog to be something you’re interested in exploring further, take a look below at our 5 Amazing Essential Oils for Summer:

  1. Lavender - much like Aloe Vera, Lavender has a soothing effect on the skin and can help to reduce the irritation of sunburn and other skin ailments. In addition, Lavender aromatherapy can be a great way to open your air passageways and calm your mind to let the stress of work and regular life pass you by while you pass the time on your vacation.
  2. Tea Tree - if you live in a climate similar to ours, Minnesota, then you’re certainly used to getting mosquito and other insect bites during the summer months. Rather than itching and scratching those pesky bites and further irritating your skin, mix a couple of drops of Tea Tree essential oil with unscented lotion to creating a cooling and soothing effect on the irritated skin.
  3. Lemongrass - an extremely versatile essential oil, Lemongrass can assist with many of the little issues that pop-up during the summer months. First, Lemongrass is a wonderful repellent for insects, as the concentration of citronellal in Lemongrass doesn’t smell nearly as delicious to bugs as we do. Also, Lemongrass can be diffused to assist with symptoms of colds to help you set them aside and get back after it on your vacation.
  4. Eucalyptus - another double-acting essential oil, Eucalyptus is a very effective soothing agent for the skin when you’ve been burned or bug-bitten, but it’s also a wonderful remedy for cold symptoms when diffused into the air. Take it with you out on the porch and see for yourself how awesome it really is.
  5. Rosemary - Great for colds, and even better as a calming agent, Rosemary essential oil is a wonderful way to help your body recover after a long day out on the water, hiking trails, or elsewhere. Diffuse it into the air or dilute it with a carrier oil and apply topically to affected areas and relax those muscles of yours.
