One question we hear from customers on a consistent basis is, “When should I use these essential oils?” It’s not uncommon for people to be interested in essential oils, but they just don’t know where to begin. The purpose of this blog will be to help those of you who are unsure of where to get started with essential oils, and hopefully shed some light on new or different ways to use oils for those of you who have already adopted them into your lifestyle!
A great place to get started is with “Surface-level” care - meaning, you can view essential oils as a replacement for some of your non-health-essential personal care techniques. A great example of this would be to replace your traditional muscle-relaxing lotions with an essential oil blend - where you might use something like IcyHot to relax an aching or inflamed muscle, you could instead blend Lavender or Eucalyptus into a carrier oil and apply that blend topically onto the affected muscle. “Surface-level” care is essentially defined as personal care that you would normally leave to an over-the-counter remedy. Although it might not be something that your body absolutely needs in order to ensure you stay healthy, “surface-level” care focuses on being comfortable.
Another good example of a “surface-level” remedy would be to try replacing your seasonal allergy medication with an essential oil like Peppermint or Lemongrass by diffusing them or applying them topically. Traditional (over-the-counter) allergy medications work to calm your immune-response to allergens, and in a similar light, oils like Peppermint and Lemongrass can actually reduce inflammation, mucus buildup, and even help to reinvigorate the immune system to make it harder for the allergens to make such a significant impact on your daily life!
A third method to incorporate essential oils into your daily life would be to simply include them in your before-bed or waking-up routines! By simply smelling essential oils or using a diffuser, you can have an easier time getting your brain ready for the day as well as for sleep. My folks use relaxing teas or lotions before bed, but what you might not know is that many of the natural “help-you-sleep” remedies include essential oils! Lavender and Chamomile are both known to help relax the mind and body and can be a wonderful inclusion to your before-bed regimen. When it comes to waking up, citrus-based oils like Lemon and Lime Peel can have a wonderful effect on grogginess as well as blood flow to the brain - you might not need that 2nd cup of coffee after all!
These are just a few ways to get started using essential oils, and there are a myriad of other methods that could be equally or even more valuable to you! Everyone’s needs and experiences are different, and it’s important to know that doing your research is certainly the most important step of this process.
